Vintage Cars
Before the 1959 Revolution, thousands of American cars were imported to Cuba. But when diplomatic ties between Cuba and the United States were severed in 1961 and the U.S. instated the economic embargo that still stands today, the flow of American cars (and parts) stopped. But due to a combination of mild climate, mechanical improvisation, and economic necessity, today Cuba's streets still team with classic American automobiles from the 1940s to early 1960s.
Many are in poor condition, yet still run, while others have been lovingly restored and maintained in pristine condition. Ad-lib sidewalk and backyard repair shops span the country, where legendary mechanics can fashion a carburetor for a '56 Chevy out of parts from an old Russian Lada, a water bottle, and a prayer. It is just one of many ironies in Cuba today that roaming its streets are rumbling reminders of American glory days.
